Energy utilisation

Definition

The energy utilisation of waste has been playing a role in the supply of energy for a long time, but it was above all restricted to self consumption. Some of the older waste (street sweepings) incineration plants were, however, connected to district heat networks, and, to a lesser extent, electricity was also generated. Waste is normally used only as a primary energy source for the generation of district heat or electricity,
while industrial wastes mostly serve as final energy sources.
